Mozzarella en Carrozza (fried mozzarella sandwich)

Mozzarella en Carrozza (fried mozzarella sandwich)

Mozzarella en Carrozza is a gloriously indulgent fried italian snack…..  gooey melted mozzarella cheese is encased in a crispy carrozza (carriage) of Italian bread that is dipped in flour, egg and then fried to perfection.   I like to serve these yummy Carrozza with my homemade Creamy Fire Roasted Tomato Basil Soup.   It’s totally satisfying!

I use fresh buffalo mozzarella – found in most supermarkets or Italian specialty stores…and a good quality Italian white or whole wheat sliced bread …  Trim off the crust (save the crust for breadcrumbs) and place one slice of creamy soft buffalo mozzarella cheese in the middle of the bread slice.  You can leave the cheese ‘naked” or add a fresh basil leaf or a thin slice of tomato   The simpler the better….

carrozza

Top with another slice of bread and press the edges together… dip the carrozza in flour – shake off excess. ..then dip in egg wash…….fry the sandwiches on both sides in hot oil until lightly brown…the cheese melts quickly.. .drain on paper and slice sandwich on diagonal and serve immediately..  All I can say is YUM!  Taste the Passion!!
